Topi Hat

Topi Hat from Knitty.com

I really loved this pattern. I finished the project in June 2007.

For it I chose Bamboo’s 100% bamboo yarn in a navy blue. This yarn is so soft!

The project starts by knitting from the crown down, all in one piece. My stitches for the center of the crown were to loose even though I was trying to pull them as tight as possible. It still turned out well though.

I had some problems with the bill. I wanted it to curve so my husband formed it for me, using the thick plastic mesh used for needlepoint, by heating it with an old iron. He used 2 pieces to make it thicker and melted them together. But, as soon as it was washed, the bill cracked into multiple pieces. Second time around we used an old Tupperware lid, heated it slightly to bend, and it seems to be fine.

The pictures are of the hat before putting in the bill.

Hi, found your blog through myspace...

How do you like knitting with the bamboo? I just bought two balls of it for a swap partener, and would love to buy myself some. But i'm not quite sure what i'd make with it...

I really like it. Its super soft, you can get it in "baby" as well which is even softer. I like that its smooth, not stiff, and works really well for shaping because it forms to the piece (like the bill of the hat) really well. The only thing that I encountered is that if I wasn't careful to catch them all threads would stick out. It is on the more expensive side so I wouldn't use it for a garment. But it doesn't pill and can be washed. I think I paid about $7 per 50g skein. Other than that I was really happy with it.

Have never knit with Bamboo but have heard it is wonderful to work with...nothing better than finding the yarn that makes you want to keep knitting...even after the project is complete! Nice hat...

Love that you got your husband to knit...what did it for him? Mine watches out of the corner of his eye...but won't touch the needles...

I think my husband just wanted to see what all of the hype was about. When I was learning he tried, but gave up. Since I was able to learn and started all these projects he decided to try again. But all he's knit is that hat- hasn't picked up the needles again since. :(
